The Friendly Mongoose

• A farmer, his wife and their small child lived in a village.
• এখন গাঁৱত এজন খেতিয়ক, তেওঁৰ পত্নী আৰু সিহঁতৰ সৰু সন্তানৰ সৈতে বসবাস কৰিছিল।


• There was also a baby mongoose in the house, who they believed would be their son’s companion and friend in future.
• সিহঁতৰ লগত এটা নকুল (বেজি) ও একে খন ঘৰতেই আছিল, যাক সিহঁতে বিশ্বাস কৰিছিল যে ভৱিষ্যতে তেওঁলোকৰ পুত্ৰৰ সংগী আৰু বন্ধু হ’ব বুলি।


• One day the farmer and his wife went out leaving the child alone with the mongoose.
• এদিন খেতিয়কজন আৰু তেওঁৰ পত্নীয়ে শিশুটিক নকুল (বেজি)ৰ লগত অকলে এৰি বাহিৰলৈ ওলাই গৈছিল।


• The farmer’s wife returned home from the market carrying a heavy basket.
• কৃষকৰ পত্নীয়ে বজাৰৰ পৰা ঘৰলৈ এখন গধুৰ টোপোলা লৈ উভতি আহিছিল।


• She found the mongoose at the entrance of the house with blood on his face and paws.
• তাই নকুল (বেজি) টোক ঘৰৰ দুৱাৰ মুখত পাইছিল মুখ আৰু পাখিত তেজ লাগি থকা অবস্থাত।


• She jumped to the conclusion that it was her son’s blood, and the mongoose was the guilty one.
• তাই জপিয়াই এই সিদ্ধান্তত উপনীত হৈছিল যে সেইটো তাইৰ ল’ৰাৰ তেজ, আৰু নকুল (বেজি) টোৱেই দোষী।

ONCE a farmer and his wife lived in a village with their small son. They loved him very much. “We must have a pet,” the farmer said to his wife one day. “When our son grows up, he will need a companion. This pet will be our son’s companion.” His wife liked the idea.

এসময়ত এটা খেতিয়ক আৰু তেওঁৰ ঘৈণীয়েক লগতে সিহঁতৰ সৰু ল'ৰা এখন গাঁৱত বাস কৰিছিল। সিহঁতে তেওঁক বহুত ভালপাইছিল। "আমাৰ এটা পোহনীয়া জন্তু থাকিব লাগিছিল" খেতিয়ক জনে তেওঁৰ ঘৈণীয়েকক কৈছিল। "যেতিয়া আমাৰ ল'ৰা ডাঙৰ হ'ব, তেওঁৰ এটা লগৰীয়া লাগিব। এই পোহনীয়া জন্তুটো আমাৰ ল'ৰাৰ লগৰীয়া হ'ব।" তেওঁৰ ঘৈণীয়েকে এই ধাৰণাটো পছন্দ কৰিলে।

One evening, the farmer brought with him a tiny mongoose. “It’s a baby mongoose,” said his wife, “but will soon be fully grown. He will be a friend to our son.”

এদিন আবেলি, খেতিয়কজনে তেওঁৰ লগত এটা ক্ষুদ্ৰ (সৰু) নকুল (বেজি) লৈ আহিলে। "এইটো এটা সৰু নকুল (বেজি)," তেওঁৰ ঘৈণীয়েকে ক'লে, "কিন্তু অতি সোনকালে এইটো ডাঙৰ হ'ব। তেওঁ আমাৰ ল’ৰাৰ বন্ধু হ’ব।"

Both the baby and the mongoose grew. In five or six months the mongoose had grown to its full size — a lovely animal with two shining black eyes and a bushy tail. The farmer’s son was still a baby in the cradle, sleeping and crying alternately.

কেঁচুৱা আৰু নকুল (বেজি) দুয়োটা ডাঙৰ হৈ গ’ল। পাঁচ-ছয় মাহত পিছত নকুল (বেজি)টো ইয়াৰ সম্পূৰ্ণ আকাৰলৈ বৃদ্ধি পালে — দুটা জিলিকি থকা ক’লা চকু আৰু জোপোহা লেজ থকা এটাৰ লগত মৰমলগা প্ৰাণী। খেতিয়কৰ ল’ৰাটো তেতিয়াও দোলনাত কেঁচুৱা হৈ আছিল, পাল-পাতি শুই আৰু কান্দি থকা।

One day, the farmer’s wife wanted to go to the market. She fed the baby and rocked him to sleep in his little cradle. Picking up the basket, she said to her husband, “I’m off to the bazar. The baby is sleeping. Keep an eye on him. Frankly, I don’t like to leave the child alone with the mongoose.”

এদিনাখন, খেতিয়কৰ ঘৈণীয়েকে বজাৰলৈ গৈছিল। তাই কেঁচুৱাটোক খুৱালে আৰু তাৰ সৰু দোলনাখনত শুয়াই দিলে। টোপোলাটো লৈ, তাইৰ ঘিৰীয়েকক কৈছিল, "মই বজাৰলৈ ওলাই আহিছো। কেঁচুৱাটো শুই আছে। তাৰপ্ৰতি নজৰ দিবা। স্পষ্টকৈ ক’বলৈ গ’লে মই কেঁচুৱাটোক নকুল (বেজি)ৰ লগত এৰিবলে মন নাই।"

“You needn’t be afraid,” said the farmer. “The mongoose is a friendly animal. It’s as sweet as our baby and they are the best of friends, you know.”

"তুমি ভয় কৰিব নালাগে," খেতিয়ক জনে কৈছিল। "নকুল (বেজি) এটা বন্ধুত্বপূৰ্ণ প্ৰাণী হয়। এইটো আমাৰ কেঁচুৱাটোৰ দৰেই মৰম লগা আৰু সিহঁত ভাল বন্ধু হয়, তুমি জানায়।"

The wife went away, and the farmer, having nothing to do in the house, decided to go out and take a look at his fields not far away. He ran into some friends on the way back and didn’t return for quite some time.

ঘৈণীয়েক জনী গুচি গ’ল, আৰু খেতিয়ক জনৰ ঘৰত কৰিব লগিয়া একোয়ে কাম নাছিল, আৰু সিদ্ধান্ত ল’লে যে ওলাই গৈ অলপ দূৰৈৰ নিজৰ পথাৰবোৰ চাব। উভতি অহাৰ পথত বন্ধু কেইজনমানৰ লগত মুখামুখি হ’ল আৰু যথেষ্ট সময় ঘূৰি আহিব নোয়াৰিলে।

The farmer’s wife finished her shopping and came back home with a basketful of groceries. She saw the mongoose sitting outside as if waiting for her. On seeing her he ran to welcome her, as was customary. The farmer’s wife took one look at the mongoose and screamed. “Blood!” she cried. The face and paws of the mongoose were smeared with blood.

খেতিয়কৰ ঘৈণীয়েকে বজাৰ কৰি শেষ কৰিলে আৰু গেলামালৰ টোপোলা এটা লৈ ঘৰলৈ উভতি আহিল।তাই দেখিলে নকুল (বেজি)টো তাইৰ বাবে অপেক্ষা কৰি থকাৰ দৰে বাহিৰত বহি আছে। তাইক দেখি সি তাইক আদৰিবলৈ দৌৰি গ’ল, প্ৰথাৰ দৰেই। খেতিয়কৰ পত্নীয়ে নকুল (বেজি)টোলৈ এবাৰ চকু ফুৰাই চিঞৰি উঠিল। "তেজ!" তাই কান্দিলে। নকুল (বেজি)টোৰ মুখ আৰু পাখিত তেজ লেপ দিয়া হৈছিল।

“You wicked animal! You have killed my baby,” she screamed hysterically. She was blind with rage and with all her strength brought down the heavy basket full of groceries on the blood-smeared mongoose and ran inside to the child’s cradle.

“তুমি দুষ্ট জন্তু! তুমি মোৰ কেঁচুৱাটোক মাৰি পেলালা।” তাই হিষ্টেৰিকভাৱে চিঞৰি উঠিল। তাই খঙত অন্ধ হৈ পৰিল আৰু তাইৰ সমস্ত শক্তিৰে তেজ লগা নকুল (বেজি) টোৰ ওপৰত গেলামালৰ বস্তুৰে ভৰা গধুৰ টোপোলাটো নমাই ভিতৰলৈ দৌৰি শিশুটিৰ দোলনালৈ গ’ল।

The baby was fast asleep. But on the floor lay a black snake torn and bleeding. In a flash she realised what had happened. She ran out looking for the mongoose.

কেঁচুৱাটো তীব্ৰ টোপনিত আছিল। কিন্তু মজিয়াত ফটা আৰু তেজ ওলাই থকা ক’লা সাপ এটা পৰি আছিল। পলকতে তাই বুজি পালে কি হৈছে। তাই নকুল (বেজি) টো বিচাৰি দৌৰি ওলাই আহিল।

“Oh! You saved my child! You killed the snake! What have I done?” she cried touching the mongoose, who lay dead and still, unaware of her sobbing. The farmer’s wife, who had acted hastily and rashly, stared long at the dead mongoose. Then she heard the baby crying. Wiping her tears, she went in to feed him.

"অস! তুমি মোৰ সন্তানক বচালা! তুমি সাপক মাৰিলা! মই কি কৰিলোঁ?” তাই নকুল (বেজি) টোক স্পৰ্শ কৰি কান্দিলে, যি মৃত আৰু নিশ্চিন্ত পৰি আছিল, তাইৰ হুমুনিয়াহ কাঢ়ি থকাৰ কথা অজ্ঞাত। খৰখেদাকৈ আৰু খৰখেদাকৈ কাম কৰা কৃষকৰ পত্নীয়ে মৃত মংগোলটোলৈ বহু সময় চাই থাকিল। তেনেতে কেঁচুৱাটোৰ কান্দোন শুনিলে। চকুপানী মচি তাই তাক খুৱাবলৈ সোমাই গ’ল।
